Back to Operational workflows

“We can’t tell whether our software supplier is any good.”

Technical leadership, part of Operational workflows: senior technical judgement on your side of the table.

If an outside supplier builds your software, or your own system has grown beyond what anyone in the business can judge, it is hard to know whether you are getting value. We give founders and boards experienced technical people on their side. That can be a part-time CTO, an independent review of a system or supplier before you spend more, or experienced engineers working inside your team.

What it does for your business

The business side first. The software comes later.

  • Know what you are paying for

A clear account of what your supplier or team is delivering, measured from the work itself rather than the status report.

  • Decisions you can defend

Plans, budgets and hires checked by people who have led engineering teams, before you commit to them.

  • The right hires

We write the role, run the technical interviews and mark the tests, as we did for Faces Consent and Oldham Engineering.

  • Experienced engineers without a hiring cycle

Engineers who join your team and take on your hardest problems, as two of ours did at Gateway.FM for nearly five years.

How the work runs

  1. 1

    Free call

You tell us what worries you: a supplier, a plan, a system or a hire.

  2. 2

    Independent review

We look at the code, the plans and the delivery record, then write up what we found and what to do about it. Quoted per job.

  3. 3

    Ongoing, if it helps

A part-time CTO role agreed month by month, or engineers working inside your team, for as long as it is useful.

Questions

What is a fractional CTO?

A senior technical person who works for you part-time: setting direction, checking suppliers and plans, hiring, and reporting to the board. You get the judgement without a full-time salary.

Will you criticise our supplier?

We report what we find, good and bad, with evidence. Often the supplier is doing fine and the review gives everyone a shared view. Where it is not, you get specific fixes and measures to hold them to.

Can you review a system before we buy or invest?

Yes. We look at the code, how it is hosted and how it is tested, and tell you the risks and what fixing them would take.

How is it priced?

Reviews are quoted per job after a short call. Ongoing roles are agreed monthly in writing.

Start with an independent review

Book a free call and tell us what you need checked. We quote a review of the system or supplier, and you get a written answer.
