Do You Need a Fractional CTO or an AI Consultant?
What a fractional CTO, AI CTO and AI consultant take responsibility for, what affects the cost and what to check before agreeing an engagement.
If you are looking for a fractional CTO or AI consultant in Sheffield, start with the responsibility you need someone to take. You may have a particular workflow to improve, several suppliers pulling in different directions, or no one keeping the overall technology plan current. Those call for different engagements.
Revitt is based in Sheffield. Max leads our fractional CTO work, backed by the wider team. We also provide AI consultancy for Sheffield businesses. Here is how we work out which remit fits.
What each role covers
| Support | A useful starting point | What to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional CTO, sometimes shortened to fCTO | You need ongoing senior responsibility for technology across the business. | The decisions, people, suppliers and risks in scope; time, access, review arrangements and fees. |
| AI consultant | You have an AI question, a workflow to assess or a defined trial to deliver. | The problem, usable data, measures, deliverables and handover. |
| AI CTO or AI fractional CTO | You need continuing leadership of AI adoption alongside wider technical decisions. | Who owns the roadmap, supplier choices, data controls, staff adoption and reviews after rollout. |
| Interim CTO | You have a temporary gap in a leadership role. | The authority, availability, duration and handover expected. |
These titles are used differently by different providers. A virtual CTO usually describes remote delivery, while part-time CTO describes a time commitment. Compare the written responsibilities rather than assuming a title gives you a standard package.
When ongoing CTO leadership helps
A supplier may be asking for another budget increase while your team is unsure what has been delivered. Different departments may be buying tools without a shared plan. You may want to hire a technical lead but need help defining the role and assessing candidates.
A fractional CTO brings those decisions into one view. The work can include strategy, investment priorities, supplier oversight, hiring, training and technical risk, with regular involvement in the leadership team. Agree which responsibilities apply to your business and who keeps authority over budgets and commitments.
Our Faces Consent case study describes a monthly CTO relationship that helped founders oversee an outsourced supplier. Oldham Engineering shows the work involved in modernising a system and putting internal ownership in place. These are examples of the work, rather than a promise that every engagement has the same scope.
When to start with an AI consultancy project
A defined question can be a better starting point than a continuing role. Perhaps staff spend hours extracting information from documents, need to find internal answers more reliably or have a pilot that works in demonstrations but fails on everyday inputs.
Choose representative examples, including failures and exceptions. Record the current time, error rate or other useful measure before comparing the proposed approach. Include the effort needed to check and correct the result. Agree who can access the information and which actions require approval.
A successful trial should leave a clear decision: continue, change the approach or stop. Wider rollout needs an owner, training, integration, monitoring and an agreed support arrangement. Our guide to starting with one regular job explains that first step.
Does an AI CTO mean software replaces the person?
It can be used that way in product marketing, so check what is being offered. At Revitt, a person leads the relationship and takes responsibility for the work we agree. AI tools may help with research, drafting or engineering tasks. They do not own your budget, accept a supplier’s terms or take accountability for the direction of the business.
An AI leadership remit should make the practical decisions explicit: which uses to pursue, how to assess quality, what data a supplier may process, who approves changes and how the team will learn to work with the result. AI also needs to fit the systems and responsibilities you already have.
What affects the cost?
Time and scope drive the proposal. The number of systems and suppliers, the state of the documentation, the people involved, the access available and the decisions you need help with all affect the work. A defined review and a continuing leadership relationship should have distinct deliverables and commercial terms.
Revitt agrees the leadership remit, time, review arrangements and retainer in writing. New systems, implementation and System Care are scoped and priced separately. The initial conversation is free. We do not publish a universal day rate or a package of included days because those are agreed for the engagement.
When comparing proposals, ask what happens when implementation is needed. Check whether the quotation includes delivery, only oversight or a separate estimate to be agreed later. Ask the same question about support after launch.
Questions to ask before you appoint someone
- Who is the named lead, and what relevant work can they show you?
- Which responsibilities will they take, and which stay with your team?
- What will you be able to inspect after the initial review?
- How will you make decisions and keep priorities current?
- How will they involve the staff affected before changing the work?
- What information and access will they need, and how will it be controlled?
- Which costs cover leadership, implementation and ongoing support?
- How will the work and documentation be handed over if the relationship ends?
For a local engagement, agree when visits are useful and how remote work and meetings will run. Sheffield is our base; we arrange on-site work when seeing the operation or meeting the people helps. Travel and availability belong in the agreement.
