1. Pick a workflow, not a technology

2. Define what "done" looks like before you start
What measurable outcome will this AI system produce? Fewer errors? Faster processing? Higher throughput? If you cannot define the outcome, you cannot evaluate the result. And if you cannot evaluate the result, you will never know if the project succeeded.
3. Build for production from the first line of code
Do not build a prototype and plan to "productionise it later." That rewrite never happens, or it takes three times longer than building it properly in the first place. Use production infrastructure from day one. Deploy to a real environment. Write tests. Set up monitoring.
4. Instrument everything
AI systems behave differently in production than in development. Models drift. Input distributions shift. Edge cases appear that you never anticipated. The only way to stay ahead of this is aggressive instrumentation. Log inputs, outputs, confidence scores, latency, and error rates. Build dashboards. Set up alerts. You cannot improve what you cannot measure.
5. Plan for the human in the loop
Most AI systems work best with human oversight, at least initially. Design your system so that a human can review, override, and correct the AI's output. This is not a sign of weakness. It is how you build trust and catch errors before they compound.
6. Own your systems
